6 OILY SKIN CARE ROUTINE TIPS

oily skin

Oily skin can be a major source of frustration. If you struggle with oily skin, here are some tips to improve skin care routine, including natural skin care options offered through our Skin Wise line:

1. Cleanser

It’s important to pick the right cleanser for your skin in order to remove excess dirt and oil. This will help reduce the chance of acne breakouts as well as improve the cosmetic appearance of the skin. An excellent choice for oily skin that is acne-prone is a cleanser either containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Either of these anti-inflammatory ingredients can help reduce excessive oil production and reduce formation of clogged pores. Benzoyl peroxide will be a little more powerful, but can be much more drying, so you have to pick the cleanser your skin will tolerate. If benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid is too drying for your skin, then stick with a foaming or gentle cleanser that will still give you a thorough wash but won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Apply your cleanser to damp skin with lukewarm (not hot!) water, avoid aggressive scrubbing, and gently rinse.

2. Exfoliator

Gently exfoliating once weekly can help invigorate the skin and assist with sloughing off dead skin cells and impurities, leaving the skin more smooth and bright. This will also help with reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, blemishes, and discoloration. Be careful to not go overboard with aggressive scrubbing, as this can lead to irritation and dryness and sometimes aggravate acne. Gentle exfoliators containing alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids can help dissolve excess oil. Skin Wise Clinical Gentle Exfoliating Scrub & Masque is an excellent option – the gentle clays and natural pumice draw out impurities and dead skin cells to improve the appearance of dullness, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and elasticity. It is also enriched with soothing extracts and hydrators to balance and nourish skin.

3. Toner

Toners help balance the skin’s pH and should be applied with a cotton round to dry, cleansed skin. There are several over-the-counter toners that contain salicylic acid or witch hazel to help prevent and treat clogged pores as well as reduce oiliness. If you’re looking for a gentle toner with soothing ingredients to balance skin, Skin Wise Clinical Enriched Soothing Toner does just that.

4. Moisturizer

A lot of people with oily skin avoid using a moisturizer out of fear that it will make their skin become even more oily. But, even if your skin does not feel dry to you, unmoisturized skin can try to overcompensate and produce even more oil. Look for a lightweight non-comedogenic moisturizer, to keep your skin hydrated without clogging your pores. Skin Wise Clinical Sheer Facial Moisturizer is a great lightweight option that provides antioxidant protection and prevents skin damage from harsh environmental stressors.

5. Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be everybody’s best friend! It not only helps prevent skin cancer, but has the anti-aging benefits of also blocking ultraviolet rays that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Use a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor of at least 30 every day. Mineral based broad spectrum sunscreens provide the most protection. Make sure your sunscreen is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog up your pores. Here are some sunscreen options with a matte-finish to help reduce oily shine:
