Use of light therapy in acne treatment

By Erin Manoles, PA-C

When topical acne treatments and/or oral prescription medications aren’t doing the trick to reduce your acne, there are still other options that may work for you.

LED (light emitting diode) therapy from Omnilux is a noninvasive, painless light treatment that helps stimulate natural processes in the skin to fight off all types of acne, including cystic acne. Studies with Omniluxhave shown up to 81% clearance of inflammatory acne lesions! Omnilux uses a combination of antimicrobial blue light with anti-inflammatory red light.LED does not contain harmful UV (ultraviolet) wavelengths and does not create heat damage to the skin. It can safely be used on affected areas of the face, chest, or back for acne treatment.

Omnilux™ LED usually requires a series of 8 treatments (20 minutes per session) on a twice weekly schedule, with a suggested one treatment per month thereafter for maintenance. Results may be evident in as little as 4 weeks, but full results may take up to 6 months. Aside from making sure you are not on photo-sensitizing medications, there is no prep time or downtime needed for this treatment.

Omnilux™ can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other treatments like Skin Pen®, Hydra Facial®, microdermabrasion, or chemical peelsto enhance overall results. Unfortunately, insurance does NOT cover LED treatment for acne, so that is something to take into account when making your acne treatment plan.

If you have more questions about Omnliux® and how it can benefit you, we would love to visit with you to discuss this treatment option either in person or virtually!
