One of the first signs of aging is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in areas of expression. Lines may also become apparent on and around the forehead, brows, eyes, and chin. Neuromodulators are used to soften and/or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.  For many years, Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® have ranked as the most common cosmetic treatments worldwide.

We offer Botox Cosmetic® (onabotulinum toxin A) and Dysport® (abobotulinum toxin) in our clinic. These neuromodulators are commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles.  Popular treatment sites include frown lines (“11” lines between the brows), crow’s feet, forehead furrows, brow lift, and perioral lines.

At North Metro Dermatology, we offer the Aspire Rewards® program for Dysport® and the Alle® program for Botox Cosmetic® to make both treatments affordable.

These neuromodulators are injected with a very small needle under the skin to relax muscles responsible for wrinkles, leaving a smoother, rejuvenated appearance. The procedure is very well-tolerated.

You should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen 7-10 days prior to treatment to minimize the risk of bruising. If you are taking aspirin under the direction of a physician, please do not discontinue the medication.  Contact our office for further instructions.

You should also avoid supplements including ginkgo biloba, garlic, cod liver oil, coQ10, flax oil, fish oil, vitamin E, St. John’s wort, as well as other omega supplements.

You should let us know if you are taking any blood thinners (i.e. Coumadin®, Plavix®, Xarelto®, Lovenox®, Eliquis®, etc) but do not stop these medications.  If you are taking Coumadin® and regularly get your INR checked, please report any abnormalities to us prior to your appointment.

If you develop an infection, rash, or cold sore prior to your appointment, please call the office to speak with our medical staff.

You should avoid alcohol consumption 2 days prior to treatment as alcohol consumption can increase the risk of bruising.

Patients can return to work or other activities immediately after treatment. You are advised to avoid massaging the area, lying down, or bending over in the 4 hours following your treatment.  Injection sites may be noticeable for a few hours (occasionally days) after treatment and include mild swelling and/or redness.  Bruising may occur and can last up to 2 weeks after treatment.  You may apply make-up immediately after treatment and continue your regular skin care products.  You are advised to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

Dysport® has a slightly faster onset of action than Botox Cosmetic®.  Results from Dysport® can usually be seen within a few days (as early as 72 hours), while Botox Cosmetic® results are noted within 7-10 days.  For both neuromodulators, full effect can take up to 2 weeks.

Wrinkle relaxation typically lasts about 3-4 months for both products, although results may last longer for some patients.

Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should not have neuromodulator treatment.  Other contraindications include muscle or nerve conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou-Gehrig’s disease), myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and patients with these conditions should not receive treatment.
