Botox / Dysport Injections

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead, and mouth to smooth lines and wrinkles. Made from a purified protein, BOTOX® and Dysport® injections relax the muscles responsible for wrinkles to give the face a rejuvenated appearance. BOTOX® and Dysport® are the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States.

Popular treatment sites include:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead furrows
  • Brow lift
  • Perioral lines
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

One of the first signs of aging is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in areas of expression. Lines may also become apparent around the forehead, brows, eyes, and chin. At North Metro Dermatology, neuromodulators are used to soften and/or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® are both treatments that effectively smooth away lines and wrinkles when injected into the skin.

When you smile, laugh, or express emotion, your facial muscles contract, causing smooth skin to develop wrinkles. Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® work by relaxing these muscles to keep signs of aging from appearing. Primarily used for cosmetic reasons, Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® can be done before you begin to notice wrinkles and fine lines to keep your skin looking smooth and youthful. It can also be used after wrinkles appear to reduce signs of aging.

Once the contracting is reduced for certain muscles, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced, resulting in a targeted treatment that looks natural. Because it is a temporary solution, treatments are typically repeated every three to six months for maximum effect.

In dermatology, Botox Therapeutic® is used to help people with hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, and is often covered by insurance. This treatment can have lasting results, stopping excessive sweating for 4-6 months.

Botox Cosmetic® vs. Dysport®

Although North Metro Dermatology does not find one neuromodulator superior, options are available to patients with different needs. Both Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® are considered safe treatment options with no downtime and few side effects. The two treatments are so similar that they can be used interchangeably as either a preventative measure to keep wrinkles from forming or an effective way of reducing existing signs of aging. Most find them equally effective, so the method you choose to use is completely up to your personal preference. Results typically last 3-4 months, although may last longer for some patients.

Although both treatments have the same effect, there are differences in their compositions. Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport® differ in the following ways.

  • Onset: Dysport® has a slightly faster onset of action than Botox Cosmetic®. Results from Dysport® can usually be observed within a few days. For both Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport, full effects can take 2-3 weeks.
  • Diffusion: Dysport® tends to diffuse more than Botox Cosmetic® due to its smaller molecule size. Diffusion differences are considered for each patient when determining dosing and placement.
  • Preservative: Both Botox Cosmetic® and Dysport contain an accessory protein to protect and enable longevity. Botox Cosmetic® contains egg, and Dysport® contains lactose.
  • Botulinum strain: Botox Cosmetic® uses OnabotulinumtoxinA, while Dysport® uses abobotulinumtoxinA.

At North Metro Dermatology, we offer the Aspire Rewards Program for Dysport® and the Brilliant Distinctions Rewards Program for Botox Cosmetic® to make both treatments affordable.
